I came across this quote from the Universal House of Justice, the democratically elected international governing body of the Baha'i Faith, "The unification of humanity is unstoppable by any human force..." In a talk I gave on Monday, this phrase was one of my last slides that I did not have time to address. I am going to share my thoughts here. Our world is on a trajectory toward unity, it is inevitable. There is nothing that the old, stale and divisive institutions can do to inhibit or block progress. There is so much hope, power and peace in this truth. It inspires me to continue to share with others the myriad ways in which we have been convinced that we are different, separate and thus to distrust one another. Engaging in the behaviours and fondling the thoughts of superiority and inferiority serve to bring us unnecessary pain as we move toward oneness. I see it like this; we are all on one of those slow moving, mechanical sidewalks that are in the long corridors of airports. It is going in only one direction and we are all passengers. No amount of influence or strength on the part of an individual or group is going to alter the direction of this sidewalk. This sidewalk includes everybody. We may link arms and began to walk along this sidewalk to increase our progress or we may simply stand and enjoy the ride. How about those who want to change direction? I have attempted this as a curious child on an escalator and seen other children play in this way. It is dangerous and hard work to go against the flow. This is what conflict looks like to me. In the face of it, we gently encourage and accompany the curious child to ride the escalator the correct way before they get injured. We are all on this sidewalk together. Let's enjoy the ride!
