My youngest son has always been a peacemaker, refusing to engage in conflict. I got a glimpse of how far his unifying presences extends. Yesterday his laptop was stolen from his schoolbag in a public restaurant. He calmly reported it to us and we worked with the police. Throughout the entire experience he did not exhibit any prejudice or fear. He sees it as a one-off occurrence, did not speculate on faults and failings, it was simply an opportunity one person used to their advantage. I learn so much from this delightful soul. It is the way to view the world as not an unsafe place but one in which people are inherently good and helpful. The police officer I had the opportunity to connect with was a beam of light. She shared her own story of working in the community and was very helpful in offering to render assistance that was outside the remit of her duties. It made me feel included in this community and part of something so much bigger. This was my first interaction with the police in Canada and I let her know that I appreciated how she approached this problem and the help she so openly displayed. The path to peace in our communities is a long one with many obstacles but when we do a little each day we build a firm foundation, one that is unwavering. Today I choose to live in the spirit of unity.
