Tolerance

being patient and forgiving of what life throws my way

Last Monday morning as I set about in preparation to do my morning routine, the keyboard on my laptop was unresponsive. The only button that functioned was the power button. I could not get into my computer and wanted to do a morning yoga routine. I tried everything then resorted to accessing the routine on my phone. It was my responsibility to host our dawn prayers on zoom, and I had a beautiful programme prepared with music that I could not access as I had not figured out how to share a screen from my phone. There seemed to be a cascade of challenges that this circumstance set in motion and I was quickly being drawn into its vortex. I had to act fast not wanting to diminish the spiritual atmosphere for any of the dawn prayer participants, so I contacted friends and asked for help. It all worked out. I then headed to the computer store for a health check for my devise. The result was a whole week without my laptop. I thought it would be unbearable but it wasn't. It opened up new ways to connect with people, enabled me to focus on conversation with my husband during our anniversary getaway and to ask for what I needed from friends in family as I connected with them... patience mostly! I have a very strong judge (perhaps as we all do) and this situation had the potential to fuel her criticism of me and exacerbate the fault-finding mechanism rendering me paralytic in situations I might face. But this was not the case, when I could feel her raise her disapproving eyebrow and scowl, I simply reminded myself that I am doing the best that I can with what I have. Life that week was memorable because my laptop keyboard died. I chose not to swim in the ocean of regret but instead to accept and work within the parameters that were open to me. I know that I need to strengthen tolerance to infuse other situations that may arise. I appreciate the malleability that tolerance engenders to assist me to move through the world with grace.
