People may say that it is crazy to make plans for the future right now, when the state of the world and the way forward is so precarious. With no job and having to stay at home, hopelessness is seductive and some what comforting, but inevitably futile. But as I have had to adjust to staying at home, connecting with others over the phone or virtual platforms that enable us to see each others smiles, I have come across something that I really enjoy and am good at! I have been reading a book to a friend. We are reading Mitch Albom's "The First Phone Call from Heaven". I never thought about how much joy it is to read to another person especially when that person does not possess the ability to do it for themselves. (As I write this I do recall reading Harry Potter to my boys when they were younger and I loved it!) It is making difference for her and as I cannot be there in person, it provides an opportunity for her to be transported out of her world for a short while, by immersing herself in a book. Similarly, I am calling a resident at an elderly home and reading prayers to her. So what does the future look like? I am nurturing a talent of reading to uplift and entertain others, perhaps there is something I can do to build on this. Who knows! But for now it is making a small difference in enabling my friends to endure this current state of affairs.
