Discernment

Seeing with my own eyes.

I am approaching the mid-way point of this fasting season [The Baha'i Fast]. I have been reading a lot about ways to simplify and purify my mind. I have been fascinated by all the ways in which I ingest toxins, nourish my mind with "junk food" and have not set up effective waste management strategies to eliminate the toxins. Reflecting on all of this I see how I need to practice discernment. I can make time to self-regulate to a certain extent (as the unsolicited "food" goes in also) what I choose to take in and ensure that it is nourishing and conducive to the results I want to see in my actions. For example to be able to act in ways that promote unity and peace, I need to ensure that what I am taking in inspires me to act in ways that bring about this effect and motivate me to take positive action. If I harbour misdirected thoughts and emotions toward people I will be hindering the elimination process and not allowing the free flow of emotions to move through me so that I may change my behaviour. This may appear simple and obvious, but it was a big "AHA" for me. This year I am on a mission to be very selective not only about the food I eat but the thoughts I hold, my actions and my associations.
